Facebook Drama

Facebook-drama

Women’s Health Magazine

Have you ever been deleted by a “friend” on Facebook? Or have you been the one doing the deleting? Have you asked someone out on a date via Facebook? Cyberdrama is becoming more and more common with the advent of various social networking sites.  I recently posted something on a friend’s Facebook wall referring to his weekend away in a “love nest” with the woman he is currently seeing.  Within 24 hours of this being posted on his wall he got a delivery at his door.  His ex had been virtually updated about his new interest and come by with a box full of his remains to return. Britney broke up with Kevin via text message.  A friend of mine was broken up with over MSN Messenger. I am positive people have broken up over Facebook.  I have found that changing my status from “in a relationship” to “single” has been enough to initiate a split. Terribly passive aggressive, but effective nonetheless. Think of how many one night stands the internet is responsible for setting up…  How many affairs?  As recorded today in Women’s Health Magazine, “Our studies show that 80 percent of people keep in contact with their exes through social-networking sites,” says Amy Muise, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of applied social psychology at the University of Guelph in Ontario.  I have one friend who only had Facebook for a few days before deleting her account.  Her reason: she saw her boyfriend was corresponding with one of his exes and knew she wasn’t able to keep both her cool and her Facebook account. In addition, I can log on and within seconds find out what the keeners on my Facebook have: eaten for breakfast, become fed up with, did last night (photos uploaded), dressed as for Halloween.  Having access to this constant flow of insignificant details can be overwhelming and tedious. It’s a privilege to be able to keep up to date with my friends and family in Ontario via Facebook. After I have clicked “not attending” when the invites are sent via Facebook, all the major events I miss have photo albums posted. I just have to be careful to stay out of the cross-firing Facebook drama.
