Monday Night Football Ruined by Unbearable Commentating

Here’s the scoop: The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons squared off last night on Monday Night Football in an NFC South divisional battle. The two teams battled to the very end before the Saints pulled away and proved why they are one of only two undefeated teams still left in the NFL. The back and fourth chess match between the Saints quarterback Drew Brees and the Falcons’ defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder was the focal point all game. However, the match itself was marred by the awful commentating that was on display. Mike Tirico is in my opinion one of the best announcers in all of sports today, but unfortunately the pairing of Ron ‘Jaws’ Jaworksi and former Buccaneers and Raiders coach Jon Gruden made it impossible for Tirico to make any of his usual insightful analysis.
The Monday Night announcing crew does a great job of giving praise to the players who are playing the game, but they hardly ever critique or make any significant perceptive or acute analysis about the game. I lost count of the amount of times I heard Gruden or Jaworski say, “Man that Drew Brees is a genius!” or “Matt Ryan is one of the best young quarterbacks in the league today!”. Ryan finished the game 19/42 completions with 1 TD pass and 3 interceptions. Hardly the game that showcased his talent. Drew Brees, the ‘Genius’ finished with 2 TD passes, 1 interception, and 1 lost fumble which was returned for a TD. Hardly numbers that a genius would hang his hat on. Monday Night Football is becoming unbearable because its almost impossible to enjoy the game whilst hearing how great ever player on the field is, every second, and for a four hour match, that’s a lot of praise. Last night it got to the point that when second year cornerback for the Saints Tracey Porter intercepted Matt Ryan, Gruden went on to say “Porter is one of the best cornerbacks in the league today”. Gruden, you’re crazy with power right now. He’s not one of the best cornerbacks, he was just doing what he’s paid to do: catch the football. I’m sick and tired of listening to these former players and coaches give the highest praise to current players because they are all part of the NFL “club”. Its no secret that the NFL players and alumni are all very close. The week leading up to the Monday Night Game, many of the players meet with Gruden, Jaworski, and Tirico to have dinner or play golf.
As a long time and avid football fan, I prefer to watch Monday Night Football at a bar or a friends house where I am guaranteed enough noise that will block out whatever ridiculous things the announcing crew is saying. Do your job and give me some real insight. I don’t need to hear every second how amazing these players are. I know how amazing they are, I watch them every week.

So turn it down and listen to some music, shithead.
I couldn’t agree more, all it’s boiled down to is hours of praise for each and every player. I can’t tell you how many players are “PLAYER is the best ADJECTIVE POSITION in the NFL today.”
“Matt Ryan is the best young quarterback in the NFL today.”
“Michael Turner is the greatest downhill running back in the NFL.”

This post was mentioned on Reddit by rocksauce: What was up with all the jokers, and mosters, and bolts, and jokers?!?!!?! Hey Jon Gruden; shut the FUCK up. The announcing was just one sided flip floppery. Whenever anyone made a good play they were the…
thanks for the comments guys, i agree with both of you…stay tuned for more football posts. And Brian, thanks for the feedback; your insight is as valuable as Grudens
well played with Brian’s incredibly helpful insight:)
Ian Jacobs is one of the best bloggers in the NFL today.
Great article.
I’m assuming Brian’s comment was ironic – nobody would be so simpleminded as to make such a toolheaded comment on a post directly addressing toolheaded commentary.
Anywho, this confirms my theory that most elements of pro-sports (I won’t say the sports themselves because Ian may meet me someday) is one big circle jerk.
I wholeheartedly agree with this article. It’s over the top marketing to fool the public, and make as much money as possible from a television product Praise where praise is due, and should always be given, but this “gushing cheerleader analysis” is a distortion of what the viewer is watching. It’s somewhat unbalanced and annoying. A retired broadcaster once said ” Sport is not meat and potatoes. You don’t need it to survive. Our job is make sure you don’t realize that”

Hahah Megan, I actually agree with the circle jerk comment; how could I not when I’m right in the middle of it! Lol. Brad and Justin, you guys are spot on! Check out my week 9 matchup previews this week

Congratulations Ron ‘Jaws’ Jaworksi and former Buccaneers and Raiders coach Jon Gruden and I’mma let you finish, but Ian Jacobs is the best NFL commentator OF ALL TIME.
The only thing worse than the endless circlejerk is the constant repeating of “National Football League”. We know what “NFL” stands for – you just sound like a pretentious douchebag just trying to fill up a few seconds of dead air. Why not give us actual analysis, since that’s why we’re listening to you?
Gruden is a football whore…he is a piece of crap with a microphone…
